On 16th December 2023, Dhivan gave a talk in the men’s community breakfast room at Adhisthana, to assembled community members and local Buddhists, to mark the end of his nearly two-year stay as resident scholar at Adhisthana. He presents some of his research on the theme of dependent arising, here focussing on the actual meaning of the expression paṭicca-samuppāda, and its allusion to an image of organic growth. With this understanding of conditionality in mind, the Buddha’s teaching on the dependent arising both of suffering and the path to Awakening take on a new significance.
