Weekend for Parents

Led by Karunagita, Lilapa, and possibly Upayavira

Following the success of the first weekend retreat for parents in 2017, we’re delighted to be offering this again at Adhisthana, led by Karunagita, Lilapa and possibly Upayavira. It is open to all parents and parents-to-be: Order Members, Mitras and others with a regular practice in the context of Triratna.

This weekend is a chance to come together with other parents, in the heart of the Triratna community, step back from the immediate demands of family life and focus on raising children as an effective context for practice. We will have meditation, ritual, talks, workshops, discussion groups and periods of silence, with space in the programme for walks, and/or rest.

Topics will draw on the inherent gifts and opportunities for practice we have as parents – for going beyond ourselves and responding creatively to not getting what we want, heart opening insights into unconditional love, endless opportunities to practice patience and letting go, insight into the constant change, ungraspability and fragility of life and so much more. We will also explore the challenges for parents wanting an effective Buddhist practice and how we can find or co-create the support and conditions we need within Triratna.

Karunagita writes:
24 of my 28 years of Buddhist spiritual practice have been within the context of raising children. Long ago I went beyond any lurking beliefs that being a proper Buddhist was only possible with acres of solitude and silence. I was inspired to write a book - A Path for Parents - for parents like me who were trying to make Buddhism relevant and to practice effectively as a parent. I was keen that it would be ‘warts and all’ rather than present an idealised, soft focus view. Many people have told me it resonated with their own experience and gave them confidence to practice.
