Triratna Scholars Network study retreat: Early Perfection of Wisdom

Led by Dhivan, Sāgaramati + Śraddhāpa

Subhuti on the Triratna Scholars’ Network:

“Accurate scholarship in Buddhist history and the study of the principal canonical languages is vital to Triratna’s survival as a relevant contemporary approach to the Dharma. Whilst we’ve learned the limitations of scholarship, we should not let that allow us to dismiss the significance to our sangha of our scholars. After all, Bhante himself was no mean scholar, and the majority of his teachers were very learned men.

I am therefore heartened to find that there are some serious scholars in our Order, and hope that we will all value them, support their activities and take advantage of their work.”

The Aṭṭhakavagga or Chapter of the Eights, from the Sutta Nipāta of the Pāli canon, presents an early version of the Buddha’s teaching, which emphases the abandoning views and opinions, and dwelling in an open state of non-attachment, a version of the Dharma that has much in common with the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajñāpāramitā) literature of later Mahāyāna Buddhism.
This study retreat, organised by the Triratna Scholars Network, will explore the Pāli text and context of the Aṭṭhakavagga, and the Sanskrit text of the Ratnaguṇasaṃcayagāthā or Collection of Verses on Precious Qualities, an early Perfection of Wisdom text. As well as the study of texts, there will be discussion of scepticism in Greek and Indian philosophy, and daily meditation on the themes of the retreat.
This event is open to Order members and mitras, and is aimed at those with an interest in the study of Buddhist texts and languages.

The retreat will start with dinner at 18:00 and you are welcome to arrive on site after 16:00, it will end at 14:30 on the last day.
