The Great Liberation: The Tibetan Book of the Dead | Immersion Retreat

23 Oct – 1 Nov | led by Prakasha, Vidyamala, Prajnanita + Khemabandhu

Oh, procrastinating one, who thinks not of the coming of death, devoting yourself to the useless doings of this life, improvident are you in dissipating your great opportunity.

Adhisthana hosts a retreat on the Bardo Thödol each year to coincide with the anniversary of Bhante’s death. It gives us an opportunity to open up to the great mystery of life and death using the Bardo Thödol – ‘The Great Liberation through Hearing in the Bardo’ – as a guide.

The retreat is fully immersive, combining hearing the whole text read aloud, reflection, talks, meditation and ritual. We can enter another world which is richly symbolic and imaginative. We can move away from our everyday mind and have a glimpse into the rich and wild realms evoked by the text.

The retreat will also remind us of the tremendous opportunity we have as Dharma practitioners to use this precious life to move towards freedom and to overcome fear of death.

The hour has come when energy and pure love are needed. May I cast off jealousy and meditate upon the guru, the Father-Mother.

Immersion Retreats weave together meditation, ritual readings of the text and voices of the Adhisthana Teaching Community to bring us more deeply into Bhante’s perspective and presentation of the Dharma.
