People of Colour Big Weekend Retreat

22 – 25 May | led by Suryagupta, Padmadhara + Amaragita

Join us for a powerful and nourishing four-day retreat, led by Order members of colour, set in the beautiful and peaceful grounds of Adhisthana. Now in its fourth year, this retreat offers a rare opportunity to come together in community with other people of colour, both nationally and internationally, to meditate, connect, and deepen our practice.

We’ll follow a carefully tailored programme that includes meditation, Buddhist teachings drawing from our lineage, talks, discussion groups, ritual, and time to rest. Together, we create a space that is both nurturing and transformative – one that supports us to step into greater freedom and growth.

This retreat is about more than practice – it’s about belonging. Whether you’re new to Buddhism or a long-time practitioner, come and experience what it means to live, breathe, and grow in a supportive and inspiring space created for people of colour, by people of colour.

Suryagupta

Suryagupta, the Chair of the London Buddhist Centre, Triratna’s largest urban centre, brings a wealth of experience to her meditation teaching. Suryagupta’s background encompasses leadership development, the arts, law, and the supporting of grassroots organisations. She is dedicated and committed to widely sharing the teachings of the Buddha as the vehicle to transform self and other. She has written and presented for BBC Radio 4 Something Understood and regularly contributed to BBC Radio 2 Pause for Thought.

Padmadhara

Padmadhara is a documentary maker and educator exploring storytelling as a way to connect communities, especially in periods of polarisation or conflict.

He was ordained in 2002 when living in a London Buddhist Centre community.  His name means ‘bringer or bearer of the lotus in the world’.

Amaragita

Amaragita’s background is in community development and working with young people at risk and the professionals that support them. She has worked for various social change movements and been a trainer, facilitator and coach for 35 years. Her passions are meditation and creating spaces for deep inquiry and celebration of the human condition. She has been leading intergenerational retreats and retreats for mothers for many years and is currently chair of Buddhafield.

Reception is from 4pm on the day of arrival, with the retreat beginning with supper at 6pm.

While you’re here you will be participating in communal life. This includes meditating with everyone on site in the main shrine room in the morning, taking part in daily tasks and at the end of your retreat you will help us to prepare the retreat centre for the next group to join us.

Note that if you would like to camp, you're very welcome to. Please mention this in your booking form under the accommodation section, and bring all your own equipment for camping.

With this in mind, the retreat will finish after the clear-up, so if travelling on public transport, please book a train after 3pm.

If travelling from London, you may be able to take a return coach from the London Buddhist Centre in Bethnal Green to Adhisthana on the first and last days of the retreat. Coach bookings will become available closer to the time.
