“Even if we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, even if we achieve world peace in the full sense of the term, even if we live in a way that is meaningful and purposeful, we shall still have to face the problem of death. Whether we live in a hell or in a heaven on earth, we shall still see the demon of Impermanence, the demon of Death, glaring down at us over the edge of the wheel.”

In 1984 Bhante gave the talk, ‘Buddhism, World Peace and Nuclear War’. He talked about how to create a better world: dealing with the problems of our age, but also the universal problem of all humanity, the problem of death. A profoundly optimistic talk, he presents a vision of human beings providing examples of compassion and sanity in the face of hatred, violence and division.

Do we, as Order Members, fulfil that vision? What issues are we facing today and how can embody the Bodhisattva vow, and become an expression of the Bodhicitta?

Join us for the December Area Order Weekend to spend time practising together as friends and perhaps, like the rising moon, the bodhicitta will be glimpsed above us.

Reception is from 4pm on the day of arrival, with the retreat beginning with supper at 6pm.

The retreat will finish in the afternoon after the clear-up. If traveling on public transport, please book a train after 3pm.

The deposit for all our events is non-refundable and non-transferable under all circumstances. For events of 2 or 3 nights this is £50, and for longer events £70.
