24 – 26 March | Led by Akasajoti & Ksantikara
Compassion is far more than emotion. It is something that springs
Up in the emptiness which is when you yourself are not there,
So that you do not know anything about it.
Nobody, in fact, knows anything about it (If they knew it, it would not be Compassion);
But they can only smell
The scent of the unseen flower
That blooms in the Heart of the Void
The Unseen Flower, Sangharakshita
At the heart of the Buddhist tradition is a tension between the wish to withdraw from the world with all its painful games and the wish to turn towards it to alleviate the suffering of all beings. Urygen Sangharakshita described the arising of the enlightened heart (Bodhicitta) as an explosion that occurs when the tension between the two becomes unbearably strong.
How can we engage more deeply with the troubles of the world with a truly creative response? Is it possible to avoid horrified anxiety and passivity, and instead stay wise and compassionate? What can we do to foster (and better balance!) the tensions between withdrawal and engagement in our daily life? On this weekend retreat, we’ll explore how to awaken our Bodhi-Heart and begin (hopefully) to taste ‘the scent of the unseen flower that blooms in the Heart of the Void’.
If you’re aged 18-30, then this retreat is for you – it doesn’t matter if you’re brand new to meditation and Buddhism, or have lots of experience, just come along!
