Sub30s Retreat: Energy & The Tantric Precepts

24 – 26 November | Led by a team of young order members

Do not obstruct the energy of any other person
Do not drain the energy of others, and give freely of your own energy.
Do not misuse energy.
Use for any given purpose the energy appropriate to that purpose, not inappropriate.
Do not allow energy to become turbid, and to keep it clear and bright.

Sangharakshita’s ‘Tantric’ version of the Five Precepts

Socrates said that once we know what’s good for us, doing it would automatically follow. That might have been true for Socrates but clearly is not true for us! All too often we waste our energy living undirected, unrefined and under-nourished lives. So how can we unblock our minds, use our potency and make the most of our friendships?

Concerned with spiritual and emotional energy, the ‘Tantric’ version of the traditional five precepts were first offered in a short booklet circulated in 1976 amongst those involved in the early years of Triratna. Back then, the fledging Buddhist movement was primarily made up of a small group of people in their twenties and early thirties. The precepts offer a way to work with our idealism, energy and excitement by developing mastery, discipline and vitality. It is easy to imagine Sangharakshita feeling the need to offer them as a direct teaching to his energetic and idealistic (but probably also naive, restless and emotionally blocked) young disciples, making them perfect material for a young Buddhist weekend retreat (even 47 years after their first appearance!).

If you’re aged 18-30, then this retreat is for you – it doesn’t matter if you’re brand new to meditation and Buddhism or have lots of experience, just come along!
