The Seductiveness of Vagueness and Liberation of ClarityKhemabandhu explores the theme of the fetter vicikitsa: doubt or uncertainty, and its positive counterpart of clarity. This is not doubt in the sense an openness of mind, but rather a wilful doubt - a wilful resistance to becoming clear. This type of doubt, or vagueness, is a barrier to living a deeply meaningful life, to choosing what we really want, and if we are a Buddhist this could manifest as a barrier to putting the three jewels at the centre of our life. Do we doubt in the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha?Do we doubt in our teacher, our practice, our community?Do we experience vagueness that stops us from wholeheartedly practising? Do we experience vagueness in the relationship actions and their karmic results? Sangharakshita: ‘We are vague when we are undecided. We’re vague when we don’t want to decide. We’re vague when we don’t want to commit ourselves, and the vagueness is, therefore, a dishonest vagueness. After all, spiritual life is very difficult. Growth and development is often a painful process, even though it is enjoyable. So we tend to shrink back, we tend not to commit ourselves. We keep our options open, as we say.’‘Breaking the Fetter of Vagueness therefore means being willing to think clearly. It means being willing to think things out, to think things through.
