19 – 26 November | Led by Ratnaghosha
The Samannaphala Sutta (Fruits of the Spiritual Life) is described by Thanissaro Bhikkhu as “one of the masterpieces of the Pali canon”. It is the second Sutta in the Digha Nikaya, and it outlines a comprehensive and very practical spiral path to enlightenment. Bhante led a seminar on this Sutta in 1982, which you can find on Free Buddhist Audio.
The sutta is a teaching given to King Ajatasattu – notorious for having killed his own father. Even the form the Sutta takes is unusual and worth pondering for the riches it may reveal.
Ratnaghosha studied this Sutta during a three-month solitary retreat and was struck by some of the teachings, which we may all be familiar with, but are not, perhaps, emphasised enough. Join him for further exploration of this ‘masterpiece’ in the context of meditation, discussion and reflection.
Reception is from 4pm on the day of arrival, with the retreat beginning with supper at 6pm.
While you’re here you will be participating in communal life. This includes meditating with everyone on site in the main shrine room in the morning, taking part in daily tasks and at the end of your retreat you will help us to prepare the retreat centre for the next group to join us.
With this in mind, the retreat will finish after the clear-up, so if travelling on public transport, please book a train after 11am.
